My name is Dameyon, a local Territorian who has been working independently in suicide prevention for over a decade in the northern regional and remote parts of WA and throughout the NT.
"Hey Brus!" is a self-initiated program I've created in response to male suicide in the NT. With a background in suicidology, I have adopted the philosophy, "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make them drink," into the "Hey Brus!" approach. This philosophy highlights the nuanced task of connecting men with services without forcing them to do so. The way "Hey Brus!" distinguishes itself is by avoiding presenting itself as a "mental health" or "suicide prevention" initiative and minimising the use of those terms.
Central to the strategy is its engagement with men in the places they frequent and employing tools and communication methods that are both relatable and accessible.
As a service, retail outlet, association, or sports club frequented by men, your support can have a significant impact.
I have created a Hey Brus! pack, that includes directory cards that offer a discreet, non-confrontational, yet powerful way for men to support each other when their mates or colleagues may be under stress. Placed on your counter or in your staff room, they can easily be pocketed for later. They're a simple act that can make a big difference.
Also included in this pack are a beanie and a couple of stubby holders for yourself or your staff, as well as some stickers and car decals.
You will notice that the directory of numbers is only on the cards and on the Hey Brus! website. This is intentional. I am attempting to differentiate this initiative by directly engaging with men through approaches that resonate with their daily lives. Incorporating a "slow and steady wins the race" approach, what you have received today is part of a 2-year plan.
If you are interested in learning more about this initiative, its 2-year plan., or would like to stock and distribute "Hey Brus!" swag, please feel free to contact me at heybrus@heybrus.com.
