NOT EVERYTHING IS MENTAL

There are a shit tonne of other factors, including quality of life stresses

  • Financial stress: This can be bloody serious, leading to feelings of hopelessness and despair. Men struggling with money troubles may be more likely to consider suicide.
  • Relationship challenges: Breakups, divorce, and  other relationship dramas... these can be major risk factors. Fellas who are separated or divorced are more likely to consider suicide than those who are married.
  • Work-related pressure: Some jobs are stressful as hell. Men are more likely than women to work in high-stress jobs and can feel it even more during work crises.
  • Trauma: Men who have experienced trauma – childhood abuse, combat, natural disasters – they're at  a higher risk of suicide.
  • Substance abuse: Fellas who are stressed and hurting can turn to booze or drugs, which only makes things worse.
  • Loneliness and isolation: These can creep up and contribute to suicide risk. Men, particularly as they age, may be prone to feeling a bit alone, disconnected, and that increases the pressure.

Left unaddressed, these things can snowball, sometimes even lead to mental health issues like depression or anxiety, all major risk factors for suicide. So blokes, it's about facing these things head-on before they take over.

Support needs to be easier for fellas to access and feel safe about using. Services should be better at getting what men need and understanding their situations.

Strong mates matter too. A mate who just listens can make a bloody big difference in someone's life. That idea of blokes always gotta be tough nuts? It actually stops us from getting the help we need, right? Fellas, real strength is facing life's crap head-on, owning your struggles, and beating them.

But it ain't about always going it alone.

Hey Brus! gives folks a way to show support without creating the pressure to talk. Passing on a Hey Brus! card is just pointing a mate in a direction. A better one.

And fellas, not everything is mental, and it’s always better out than in.
